recipe upgrade

{comfort in a bowl}

Growing up and during our first year of marriage, I loved making mac and cheese.  However, the recipe I'm accustomed to uses copious amounts of Velveeta, and to be honest I have no idea what that stuff is!  So, to avoid using a "cheese-like substance," I turned to my old friend, the Barefoot Contessa, for a serious recipe upgrade.  I loved the cavatappi pasta (and omitted the tomatoes on top).  I have to say this made a ridiculously amazing meal, and there's no going back now!

farmers' market fresh

{a paparazzi-style shot by my sweet father-in-law from last year's market}

I love going to our Farmer's Market.  Every Saturday morning, we can head over and find the best, local, in-season food and flowers.  When people are visiting, I love taking them here and to the IMA for a long bike ride.  This week, I'm picking some more herbs to plant on my porch and hoping for good deals on berries.

mother's day {times two}

This year we were lucky enough to celebrate Mother's Day with my mom and Zach's mom.  We moved over Mother's Day weekend, so we grilled out with my family after the move on a lovely, sunny day.  It was really our first meal in our house and so perfect that it was spent with family.

Side note: Only my physics major, long-haired, little brother would grab a ruffled cake stand to load with grilled hamburger buns.

The next weekend, my in-laws stopped by the house on their way home from a Florida vacation.  Zach and I made last minute plans to cook dinner for them while they were over.  So, we ran over to Fresh Market to pick up the ingredients for a yummy recipe from Raising Foodies.  I'd seen Joslyn post this awhile ago, and I'd been meaning to make it.

{recipe hunting...with a little stress}

Seriously, this recipe was easy, fast and delicious.  It has been added to our family favorites!  I know Mother's Day was awhile ago, but we had such a good time celebrating it in our new house that I just had to record the memories.

dear friends,

This weekend, I am stoked for the following things:

  • a wedding with lots of old friends
  • dancing with Zach - he's got moves.
  • a haircut from my best friend and lots of talking about her brand-new nephew
  • my brother's birthday dinner at Takaoka (a hibachi Japanese restaurant)
  • catching up on The Office, Modern Family and Grey's episodes at my mom's
  • snuggling with Molly puppy and a cup of coffee
  • sunshine (fingers crossed!)
Next week internet is returning to our house, and I've got about 10 posts running through my head that I can't wait to "get on paper" (er, the Internet paper that is..).  I hope you're going to a have a fantastic weekend too!

real celebrity style

I love Meg Ryan.  I watch You've Got Mail every summer, because when she talks about a bouquet of freshly-sharpened pencils and works in a bookshop it makes me excited to be surrounded by those things too.  (Ok, I know this is a character and not really Meg...but you know what I mean.)

So when I stumbled across her gorgeous Martha's Vineyard home and found I loved her real style too, I was doubly in love.  It is the perfect mix of fresh white paint, grey linen, and industrial accents.

{wire baskets, huge windows, and drop-dead gorgeous tile}

{huge wooden work table, industrial pendants, no upper cabinets}

{natural rug, light pillows, grey linen curtains}

“The whole idea is to keep things as simple as possible;
I like everything pared down to its purest form.”

closet inspiration

{House Beautiful}

"Don't forget the closet! Love your closets.
Paint them, paper them, hang pictures in them to inspire you.
And definitely light them."

On our to-do list this summer is finishing some attic space to make a closet in the master bedroom for me.  All my clothes are currently in rooms downstairs and some are hanging from a portable rack in our room.  I love this closet and can't wait to make a closet my own!

If I don't blog about this I will totally forget this advice!  Who has time to remember to hang vintage, glamourous pictures in a closet?

Do any of you have inspiring closets?...if so, I'd love to see them (and maybe even post some pictures!)

I kind of like the mix of these two swim separates from Anthropologie.  They're both on sale, and still expensive...but the look would be fun and youthful.  I usually stick to basics (black, coral pink) and definitely matching pieces.  If I had money to spend, I might jump for these just to try them together.  And if I HAD to pick a coverup, this pink number is right up my alley:

can i have another escape?

My in-laws are vacationing in Siesta Key this week and next, and right this moment I am wishing I was lounging poolside without a care.  Let's be honest - moving is stressful.

Every day has been spent prepping for labs, ensuring students don't burn/stab/infect themselves, grading, and lecturing.  Then in the afternoon I get to head over to the house (!) and clean the kitchen cabinets, load and unload boxes, unpack and wash dishes, and sterilize the bathrooms.  Last night we stayed there until 11 putting together an Adirondack chair.  Needless to say, I'm exhausted and so is Zach.

However, I am SO excited for this weekend.  My whole family will be together Saturday and Sunday.  We'll move and then have a big sleepover at our home.  I'm planning a Mother's Day lunch for my mom and I can't wait to just sit back and soak in our new house.  In a related note, only 12 days of school left!  I have so many projects lined up for this summer.  I can't wait to get started and fill you in on all the details...

what I should have bought 6 months ago...

Perhaps a commanding dishtowel would have helped me to be more vigilant about the dishes that pile up each week.  But probably not...

In honor of our last week in this little duplex (sans dishwasher), I have to say that my cooking motivation has dwindled in the last six month thanks to the annoying task of creating a mess that I must clean up with my own two hands.  I am thrilled at the idea of cooking in a kitchen where at least 80% of the mess will be cleaned up by a friendly little machine.  Dishwasher, I love you!

P.S. Is it bad that I am considering lugging our dirty dishes over to the new house and promptly placing them in the dishwasher instead of washing them in the sink?
